Board Games By The Bay is all done for the year!

The last Board Games By The Bay for the year – Auckland in November – is all over and done. And a pretty great weekend of gaming it was too. We had 158 people through the door on Saturday and 107 on Sunday, which according to our records makes it the most attended BGBTB yet! Of course, we’re not mind readers, but judging by the comments and expressions and general body language, most everybody was having some seriously good fun over the weekend. We had a great turnout of regular attendees and also once again a number of first-timers, many of whom assured us they would be back for more!

We also had a section full of New Zealand based designers play testing prototypes and showcasing their games at BGBTB. We are particularly grateful for the generous prize sponsorship and ongoing support for BGBTB by Martin Wallace (Treefrog Games), Shem Phillips (Garphill Games), Julia Schiller (Cheeky Parrot Games), Amanda Milne (SchilMil Games) and of course the very best wholesale supplier of board games in the wide world, Pixelpark. We had three play to win competitions this time, for Cat Capers, Raiders of the North Sea and Kyle Johnson‘s prototype, Vikings: Hoards Abroad.

The Math Trade was a big success with some happy swaps and even some statistical results to come: here.

And a very big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who made the weekend happen, David and David for much needed first day assistance (my back thanks you), Kelly and Jay for all their great help during the event and the incomparable Juliet and Jason without whom BGBTB would be so much less.

This is now a year since David Taylor stood at the front of BGBTB and introduced us as the new owners of Seriously Board. We kinda forgot to mark the occasion this last weekend. We’ve now run three BGBTB of our own and feel like we almost have the hang of it. They’re a lot of work for many weeks prior and during the event, but every time we come away incredibly satisfied. What has struck us every time is the great time that people have and the super awesomely nice people who come to BGBTB. Oh, and a sense of anticipation waiting to see what new delights Matthew and Nathan will bring along …

Probably said too much here, apart from – these events are just so damn satisfying to run, and everything is worth it to see the fun people have at them.

Anyway – time for some pictures:
