Over 120 people attended Auckland’s second weekend board game event, Board Games By The Bay. As well as regular gamers, this year we saw a large number of new players and families attending. Around 75 people came on Saturday and 85 people on Sunday, with around 40 people coming on both days.
Referring to Saturday’s double-booking of the hall, co-founder David Taylor said, “We didn’t have to change our venue on Sunday but we will in 2013 as we packed out the hall, with people squishing closer together to give others the room to join tables. We’ve officially outgrown the venue!”
“There were a number of young kids present, which was great to see. We had PitchCar set up on the stage and this was a particularly popular title with the school kids.”
There was plenty of room for serious gamers too: “The two games that I saw being played again and again were Eclipse and A Game Of Thrones. They aren’t short games, but both of them got plenty of table time with different groups.”
BoardGameGeek member Dan Nickoley wrote up his experience of Board Games By The Bay, saying “All the best of success for Seriously Board. You guys are offering the whole package for New Zealand gamers”.
Thanks Dan, and thanks to everyone who came along and made an excellent weekend possible!
We managed to give away hundreds of dollars worth of games and prizes, thanks to the generous support of PixelPark, Dr Wood, Treefrog Games, and SchilMil Games.
Pixelpark is the leading New Zealand supplier for board games and role-playing games. They don’t sell to the public, so contact us if there’s anything on their website you’d like us to source for you.
Auckland-based Schilmil Games publishes Komodo, and Raid The Pantry, which will soon be listed at Seriously Board, and they organised informal tournaments to gain exposure for both of their games.
There are upcoming Board Games by the Bay weekends planned for Tauranga and Hamilton in 2012, and more events in the pipeline for next year. Stay up to date by subscribing to our board gaming news mailing list.
